SEND AN EMAIL: Don't Let the State of Florida Regulate Your Reading

HB 1539 will deny local communities the opportunity to decide the age-appropriate standards for materials available in its public schools and hand this power over to the state.

Under HB 1539, books could be removed based on isolated passages without considering the work as a whole. This opens the door to the suppression of classic and culturally significant texts without intervention from the Florida Department of Education. Hundreds of celebrated works would likely disappear statewide from public school libraries under this law, even as they remain available to students in taxpayer-supported private schools.

Florida's public school students deserve more respect from their government and the freedom to seek out protected speech that fulfills their educational needs. Our educators deserve the autonomy to work within the professional boundaries consistent across this great country to ensure Florida's students are prepared for the world they face today. Our communities deserve thriving public schools that collaborate with all parents to meet the unique needs of the students and communities they serve. HB 1539 threatens that vision for Florida's future. That's why we're asking elected officials to vote "NO" on HB 1539.
